A lot of artist think platforms such as Instagram should be the main focus when it comes to marketing their music.  And while this is mostly true, you should also be utilizing social media to create more opportunities to connect personally with your fans who discover you there.

When you solely rely on these platforms you are subject to things such as:

  • Relying solely on their algorithm.
  • Never knowing if you’ll reach all your followers.
  • You can’t directly reach your audience.
  • Getting shadow banned or your post reach being limited.
  • Getting banned on any of these platforms will result in you losing your audience.
  • You can’t personally connect with every single fan, as it will take you hours of private messaging.
 

Focusing on these platforms is one the best way to get discovered,  but you also need to  have a way to directly connect with you fans and build long term relationships.

Email marketing for artists is a strategic approach to promoting your music, engaging with fans, and building a loyal audience through the use of email. It involves sending targeted emails to subscribers who have opted in to receive updates, news, merch drops and new music releases from you as the artist.

With email marketing, you can send a personalized email to all your fans at once, reaching them directly.

The power of email marketing for Artists

When I’m writing this post, I’m speaking from my personal experience and success with email marketing as a music producer.

When  collect your fans’ email addresses, this builds a long-term relationship with them. It’s as simple as sending an email to make sure everyone who supports you will get updated.

Up until this point, I’ve managed to grow my email list with more than 3000 people who downloaded and purchased beats from me. 

Every time I send out emails and updates about my music:

  • People open them,
  • Reply with their thoughts,
  • Support me
  • Buy music from me directly

Email marketing: A direct-to-fan relationship

By using this method you are able to directly monetize from your fans by promoting your latest album digitally and physically, as well as sell  merch and tickets. All of this without a middleman like a social media company or Spotify.

Imagine this, if just one person from you mailing list buys your digital album or merch for $15, then that would be the equal to getting 6301 streams on Spotify.

While having your music on streaming  platforms is a great way to monetize and get discovered, this should be just one part of the puzzle for an Artist.

To start building an email list is a simple as offering a  free MP3 download of your music, exclusive content or a merch giveaway, in exchange for an email address.

Conclusion: Why you should focus on email marketing as an Artist looking to promote their music

As a music producer, I’ve focused on Instagram and started getting a lot of traction and people following me there, but I got banned without any reasonable explanation. The thing that I didn’t lose is my email list, which is not subject to any company that decides to take my audience away from me.

The sooner you start building up your loyal fans and customers via email marketing, the better and more monetizing opportunities you will create for yourself as an Artist.

Once you get behind the technical aspect, it will be easy to automatically send emails and get new subscribers.
